What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive intervention based on a thorough patient assessment followed by patient-tailored therapies that include, but are not limited to, exercise training, education, and behaviour change, designed to improve the physical and psychological condition of people with chronic respiratory disease, and to promote the long-term adherence to health-enhancing behaviours.

Who can join the program?

Any patient with obstructive or restrictive lung disease whose activity of daily life is limited due to dyspnea can be referred for pulmonary rehabilitation.

What are the goals of this program?

All major pulmonary organisations such as the American College of Chest Physicians and the European Respiratory Society, recommend that pulmonary rehabilitation should be an integral part of the treatment program for all patients with reduced lung capacities like COPD and asthma. It should also be considered as a standard of care for patients with Interstitial Lung Disease.

What does the program consist of?

The program includes:

  • Aerobic exercises like treadmill walking, cycling, elliptical, which are prescribed after assessing your baseline capacity. The baseline capacity is mainly assessed on the basis of the 6-minute walk test, which is done on the day you enrol into the program. If required, you will be given exercises with supplemental oxygen.
  • Strength training helps to build up muscle strength of various muscle groups in the body. This is done with the help of different weight cuffs, dumbbells, elastic therabands and pneumatic machines.
  • Breathing exercises are a part of the warm up and cool down exercises. This is to improve your overall lung capacity. It is of prime focus in all-pulmonary patients.
  • Your oxygen saturation will be continuously monitored while you are exercising. In addition, the therapist will also timely assess your blood pressure, heart rate, and exertion levels.
  • Yoga, in the form of various flexibility, breathing exercises and meditation provides relaxation, which will help you deal with the stress and improve your mental and spiritual well-being.
  • Diet is one of the important aspects of lifestyle modification, which needs to be incorporated in all individuals with pulmonary disease. Our team of dieticians will help you with a diet plan and all your queries pertaining to diet.

What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is a structured program, which is designed to help people with heart disease return to an active and satisfying life and to prevent recurrence of cardiac events.

What are the goals of this program?

Cardiac rehabilitation has Class I: Level A evidence in immediate post-surgical patients who have undergone CABG and recent angioplasty, which implies that all patients who have a cardiac history MUST enrol in a cardiac rehabilitation program.

Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
